Action on Dementia

Dementia is Ireland’s hidden health crisis with huge gaps in services and policy responses that have led to a crisis for carers and people living with dementia. A national dementia strategy would enable the formulation of a strategic and fully co-ordinated response to meet the needs of people with dementia and their carers.

As part of The Alzheimer Society of Ireland's election campaign we are asking all election candidates if elected, to pledge their support for the 44,000 people living with dementia and their 50,000 carers in the following ways:

  • A committment to developing a National Dementia Strategy by 2013 to be included in the next programme for Government and to ensure there is a Minister / Minister of State appointed overall political responsibility for its delivery, with dedicated funding and implementation plan.
  • The provision of quality driven, dementia specific services in the community

Following the General Election 2011, The Alzheimer Society of Ireland was delighted to note a commitment to a national dementia strategy in the Programme for Government for the first time in Ireland. A big thank you to all those candidates who pledged their support, a list of names and constituencies is available here.

If you would like to show your support for making dementia a national health priority and the development of a national dementia strategy; (Better community services, earlier diagnosis, awareness and education programmes and more medical and social research); send us an email today to show your support.
