Celebrating Two Years of Alzheimer's Day Care in Castlebar
5 March 2008
The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is celebrating two years providing specialist Alzheimer's Day Care Services to the people of Mayo by saying a big THANK YOU to local people and businesses for their generosity and caring.
This Alzheimer's Centre, the first of its kind in the area, is located in Knockthomas Drive, Castlebar. It offers a safe, stimulating and sociable environment to more than 25 local people with Alzheimer's, three days per week. Carers also benefit from the short break they obtain and from the information they receive from staff of the centre.
Appealing for continued local backing, Des Mulligan of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland says: "We hope that the people of Mayo will continue to be generous to those affected by Alzheimer's. Monies donated to our centre will provide a lifeline to local people living with this devastating condition and to their families. Please continue to be as generous as you can!"
More than 1,545 people in Mayo are now affected by Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. Demographic trends indicate that the numbers of people affected will double within 20 years putting extra pressure on local services.
Despite consultation from the outset with all the relevant health care providers, funding is a serious issue for the centre. Fas and Pobal provide some support but the running of the centre is largely dependant on local fundraising and donations.
