The Alzheimer Society of Ireland wins prestigious PRII award for Public Affairs campaign.

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland has been awarded the prestigious PRII (Public Relations Institute of Ireland) award for Excellence in Communications for its public affairs campaign to make dementia a healthcare priority in Ireland.

The Society's submission entitled "Prioritising dementia - towards a national strategy" outlined The Society's public affairs campaign during 2010 and in the run up to Election 2011 to ensure a commitment to a National Dementia Strategy be included in the new Programme for Government.

The campaign won the award based on the teams ability to; achieve a clear set of objectives; proactively engage the media; creatively communicate with influential stakeholders and listen to the voice of the people they represent.

A University of Oxford study, published today (8/9/2010) in the journal Public Library of Science ONE, has shown that daily tablets of B vitamins can halve the rate of brain atrophy in elderly people who have Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI).

The two year randomised double-blind clinical trial is the largest to study the effect of B vitamins on MCI and one of the first disease-modifying trials in the Alzheimer's field to show positive results in people, according to the study.

Specialist community services are essential so that people affected by Alzheimer's can remain at home for as long as possible, according to broadcaster Pat Kenny, today at the launch of the 15th national Alzheimer's Tea Day in aid of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland. Kenny, whose late mother Connie had Alzheimer's disease for 14 years, is stirring up support for Tea Day to ensure that families can access local Alzheimer's services when they need them.

A review of 2007 calls to the Alzheimer Society of Ireland's National Helpline, released today to launch Alzheimer's Tea Day, is highlighting the urgent need for more dementia services to serve the rapidly growing numbers of people affected by Alzheimer's disease and dementia in Ireland. In the four years from 2004 to 2007, the total number of calls received by the Alzheimer Helpline rose by 230% and the profile of those contacting the service changed substantially.
